Tax

Rough, plain arithmetic estimates for Indian personal tax rules, using the rates in force after the July 2024 changes, unchanged through the 2025 and 2026 budgets. This is not tax advice, tax rules and thresholds do change, so treat this as a starting estimate and check with a chartered accountant or the income tax department for anything that matters, like an actual filing.

Capital Gains on Stocks and Equity Mutual Funds

Applies to listed shares and equity oriented mutual funds where securities transaction tax is paid. Holding for 12 months or more makes it long term.

These default rates and the exemption are current as of the last update to this tool. If it has been a while, or a new budget has come out, check they still match before relying on the result.

Debt Mutual Funds and Other Slab Rate Gains

Units of debt, liquid, or money market funds bought on or after 1 April 2023 get no long term benefit at all. Every rupee of gain is added to your income and taxed at your regular slab rate, no matter how long you held it.

Fixed and Recurring Deposit Interest

FD and RD interest is always taxed at your slab rate, it never gets a special lower rate. Banks also hold back a TDS if your interest crosses a threshold, though you still owe tax on the full amount at your slab rate regardless.

Section 80C Saving

PPF, tax saver FDs, ELSS mutual funds, and life insurance premiums can all count here, up to a combined ceiling of ₹1.5 lakh a year. This only applies if you are filing under the old tax regime, the new regime does not allow it.

NPS Saving Under Section 80CCD(1B)

A separate deduction just for NPS, on top of the ₹1.5 lakh Section 80C ceiling above, not sharing that limit with it. Like 80C, this only applies under the old tax regime for your own contributions. If your employer also contributes to your NPS, that portion has its own separate benefit under Section 80CCD(2), available in both regimes, not covered by this calculator.

Rental Income

A simplified version of how a let out property is taxed: a flat 30% standard deduction is allowed on the rent left after municipal taxes, and home loan interest on a let out property can be deducted in full, with no cap.

Where PPF Stands

PPF follows what is usually called the EEE method, exempt, exempt, exempt. The amount you put in can count towards your Section 80C deduction under the old regime, the interest that builds up every year is entirely tax free, and the final amount you withdraw at maturity is tax free too. There is no calculator needed here, this is simply one of the few investments in India where tax never enters the picture at any stage.
